How We Assign Severity: Critical, High, Medium, and Low

The Brand Health Audit assigns severity ratings based on the measurable business risk and narrative suppression caused by a defect, rather than treating every technical error as an equal failure. Most automated website auditing tools operate on raw technical counts, flagging a missing alt tag on a decorative icon with the same urgency as an unindexed primary product page. Our scoring engine instead measures the functional damage an issue inflicts on your buyer journey, search discoverability, and AI model citation accuracy.

Each finding uncovered during an audit is categorised into one of four distinct severity tiers: Critical, High, Medium, or Low. These ratings determine how heavily a finding penalises your category scores and establish the operational sequence your marketing, design, and engineering teams should follow during remediation. The Brand Health Audit is an evaluation platform created by The Branded Agency to provide leadership teams with actionable clarity on where their brand equity and conversion funnels are actively leaking value.

The problem with generic technical error counts

Standard web crawlers produce bloated reports filled with hundreds of minor warnings. When a tool flags 400 missing image descriptions alongside a broken checkout or an unverified corporate identity, teams suffer from prioritisation fatigue. The typical result is that engineering fixes simple, low-impact issues while high-consequence strategic flaws remain unaddressed.

The Brand Health Audit avoids this failure mode by evaluating issues through a commercial and structural lens. We assess how human visitors interact with your narrative and how search engines or large language models parse your entity authority. For example, a missing Open Graph image on an orphaned blog post is an isolated Low severity hygiene issue. In contrast, conflicting core value propositions across your primary landing pages create structural doubt for buyers, earning a High severity rating due to its direct impact on lead conversion.

The four severity tiers defined

To provide clear operational prioritisation, our methodology divides every finding across all audit categories—such as technical SEO, messaging clarity, trust signals, and conversion UX—into four unambiguous levels.

Severity Level Definition & Commercial Impact Primary Risk Typical Remediation Owner
Critical Complete failure of a core system, conversion path, or primary brand signal that halts commercial activity or renders the site invisible. Immediate revenue loss, complete de-indexing, or critical trust collapse. Lead Developer / Technical Founder
High Substantial barrier to conversion, severe messaging ambiguity, or crawl suppression that actively degrades pipeline performance. Conversion rate depression, AI citation exclusion, lost qualified leads. Product Marketer / Senior Copywriter / Frontend Dev
Medium Measurable friction or inconsistency that weakens authority, dilutes positioning, or impairs accessibility standards. Reduced engagement, brand drift across channels, competitive disadvantage. Content Designer / UI Designer / Junior Dev
Low Minor technical hygiene issue, cosmetic inconsistency, or peripheral optimisation opportunity with minimal immediate risk. Long-term code bloat, slight visual polish deficits. Webmaster / Content Editor

Critical severity: systemic failure and blocked pathways

A Critical finding indicates an active blocker that prevents users or machines from completing essential actions. In conversion experience, this includes broken lead forms, non-functional booking integrations, or catastrophic mobile layout failures that obscure calls to action.

In technical architecture and discovery, Critical issues include unintended sitewide crawl blocks within instructions configured under the Robots Exclusion Protocol (RFC 9309) or broken canonical configurations. When crawlers cannot parse primary pages as outlined in Google Search Central's guidance on consolidating duplicate URLs with canonicals, search engines cannot index your content, cutting off organic discovery entirely.

High severity: conversion friction and narrative suppression

High severity issues do not break the website technically, but they severely undermine commercial performance. In messaging and positioning, a High finding occurs when your primary value proposition fails to explain what your company does within the initial screen view. According to research on how users read on the web by the Nielsen Norman Group, visitors scan digital properties rapidly; ambiguous copy forces immediate abandonment.

In search and AI discovery (AEO/GEO), High severity findings include missing primary entity structured data defined by Schema.org Organization standards, or severe Core Web Vitals failures. When Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) or layout shifts degrade performance, they suppress search rankings and introduce buyer hesitation as documented in Google's research on Core Web Vitals.

How severity influences scoring and deduction weights

Your overall Brand Health Score is not a simple arithmetic average of checklist items. Severity levels directly govern the magnitude of point deductions applied within each audited category.

When a category contains a Critical finding, the scoring algorithm applies a steep, non-linear penalty. A single Critical issue can reduce a category score below passing thresholds because a foundational failure invalidates secondary optimisations. A beautifully written case study cannot drive value if the contact mechanism fails or if technical blocks prevent discovery.

Critical Finding: Immediate 30–50% category deduction (Requires urgent triage)
High Finding: 10–20% category deduction (Prioritised sprint item)
Medium Finding: 3–7% category deduction (Standard backlog item)
Low Finding: 1–2% category deduction (Hygiene maintenance)

High severity findings carry significant weight but allow a category to maintain a moderate score if surrounding execution is strong. Medium and Low findings apply minor, incremental deductions that primarily differentiate good digital executions from outstanding ones. Platform limitations and human context

While our automated scanners and diagnostic models reliably categorise technical, structural, and semantic defects, algorithmic severity classification has practical boundaries.

The audit evaluates digital surfaces as presented to external users and search crawlers. It cannot measure internal offline sales conversations, private commercial agreements, or offline brand equity that might compensate for digital weaknesses. A High severity messaging ambiguity on a public website may have less immediate impact on an enterprise firm whose revenue is driven purely by existing relationship networks. However, as digital due diligence and AI search tools increasingly mediate B2B buying cycles, these digital defects inevitably introduce friction over time.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Low severity issue turn into a High severity issue over time?

Yes. An isolated missing tag or minor layout bug is Low severity on a secondary page, but if that issue propagates across a global template or affects high-traffic conversion funnels, its cumulative risk elevates its severity in subsequent audits.

How does the platform decide between High and Critical severity?

Critical severity is reserved for total blockers—such as broken checkout flows, complete crawl denial, or catastrophic positioning failures where a user cannot determine what the company offers. High severity indicates severe friction, ambiguity, or performance drag that impairs results without completely halting site operation.

Do severity ratings differ across different business models?

The underlying scoring principles adjust based on site architecture and stated business type. An e-commerce platform will see checkout friction weighted with Critical severity, whereas a B2B consulting site will see missing lead mechanisms or absent trust proof points weighted more heavily.

Does fixing all Critical findings guarantee a passing Brand Health Score?

Resolving Critical issues removes catastrophic failure points and restores baseline functionality, but achieving a strong score requires resolving High and Medium issues that govern narrative clarity, visual consistency, and discoverability.
